なぜ武蔵は二刀流なのか？

武蔵と言えば二刀流というイメージがありますが、元々は武蔵少年が神社で、太鼓を打つ人が左右の手を使い二本の撥（ばち）で太鼓を打っていたのに、左右の音に違いがなかったことに感動したからといわれています。つまり左右の手いずれでも同じ音を出せることに驚いたのです。

通常太刀は両手を添えて持つものとされています。それは重いからです。そこで武蔵は太刀と刀を両手でもつ二刀流、二天一流を編みだしました。なぜならば、常日頃から二刀を両手でもって練習しておくことで、左手でも右手でも片方の手だけで重い太刀を自由自在に操ることができるようになるからと考えたからなのです。もちろん両手に持っても闘えることは生死をかけた闘いにおいてあらゆる手段を使おうとする武蔵にとっては必要なことだったのでしょう。

ただ闘いのときに武蔵はつねに二刀流であったわけではありません。実際の闘いは、馬上であったり狭い部屋であったり様々な状況で起きます。生死をかけた闘いにおいてどんな状況であっても勝つために最も相応しい武器を使いこなせることが何よりも重要だと考えたのです。

武蔵は二刀を両手に持つ二天一流について「五輪書」で以下のように詳しく述べています。

わが流儀を二刀流と名付けること

「わが流儀を二刀流と名付けること

わたしが二刀流を編み出した理由は、武士であれば将軍であれ兵隊であれ、

誰もが腰に二本の刀を差すからである。

以前は、剣の事を太刀、刀と呼んだが、今は刀、脇差と呼ぶ。

武士が大小二本の刀を腰に差す理由は説明するまでもない。

日本では、理由を知っているかどうかは関係なく、大小二本の刀を腰に差すことは武士の道なのである。

わたしが編み出した二刀流の長所を世間に知らせるために二刀一流または二天一流といっている。

槍、長刀以下、弓、馬、柔、棒、鎖鎌などの諸術は外の物と呼ぶ武器だ。

わが二天一流の兵法では、たとえ初心者であっても、太刀と刀を両手に持って

修練するのが正しい方法だ。武士が生死をかけて闘うときは、身につけた武器はすべて活用したいものだ。武具を使うことなく、ただ腰に差したまま死んでしまうことは不本意だ。

しかし、両手に武器を持つと、右手も左手も思うように動かしにくくなってしまう。

太刀を片手で操る習慣がそれまでなかったからである。槍、長刀などの大きな武具は両手で持つしかないが、刀、脇差は、本来片手で持つ武具だ。

太刀を両手で持つとよくない理由がいくつかある。馬上や走るとき、都合が悪い。

沼、泥田、石原、険しい道、人混みでも都合が悪い。

左手に弓や槍、その他の武具を持っているときには、皆片手で太刀を使っているのだから両手で太刀を握って使う方法は、本来の剣の道ではないのである。

片手では敵を斬り殺しにくいという場合は、両手を使って殺せばよい。

悩むことはない。まず片手で太刀を振れるようにするためには両手で二刀を握り、太刀を片手で振って感触をつかむことである。

最初は誰でも太刀が重く感じられるので、振りづらいものだが、太刀に限らずどんな武具にも共通して言えるのは、はじめのうちはどれも使いにくいのだ。

弓も引きにくいし、長刀も振りにくい。

いずれの武具も、使い慣れることが大事で、弓も修練を重ねれば次第に強く

引くことができ、太刀も片手で振り続けていけば、コツがつかめるようになり、うまく振れるようになるのだ。

太刀の道というのは、ただ速く振ればよいというものではない。そのことは水の巻に記すので、読んで理解してもらいたい。

太刀は広い場所で振り、脇差は狭い場所で振るのが有利だ。これが基本である。

わが二天一流の兵法が目指してきた真髄は、長い刀でも勝ち、短い刀でも勝つことである。

したがって、持つ太刀の長さを定めていない。

どんな太刀でも勝てると思う精神が、わが二天一流の道なのである。

一刀より二刀の方が威力を発揮するのは、一人で大勢に向かう場合や座敷など屋内の狭い

場所で闘う場合などである。ほかの例はこの二例から類推してほしい。改めて書くほどのことではない。

兵法の道を知り、それを実践していけば、わからないことはなくなるだろう。

そのことをよくよく考えてもらいたい。」（筆者意訳）

武蔵から学べること

このことから学べることは以下のようなことではないでしょうか？

１　目的は「勝つこと」であり、あらゆる手段を使いこなせ。

２　実践で役に立つよう練習では負荷をかけろ

３　型にはまった考え方や常識にとらわれていては、実践で役立つ実力はつかない

経営学でもよくフレームワークという思考のパターン、公式のようなものがあります。それらを学ぶことは役立ちますが、それらに囚われてしまう弊害も指摘されています。業種によっても職種によっても異なることが多いからです。できればそれらを基に、自分の仕事に役立つ独自のフレームワークを自分で考えだすべきなのです。

また売上が伸びないといった悩みがある場合、あらゆる手段を検討することが大切でしょう。以前やったけどうまくいかなかったといって実行しないケースがありますが、今とそのときとでは環境も顧客も競合も変わっている可能性があります。今一度再検討することが必要かもしれません。

勉強をすることは実践に役立つためです。たとえばビジネス書を読んでもほとんどの人は実行しません。これはとても勿体ないことです。失敗しても良いから実践してみることが大切です。その失敗からまた学ぶことも多いはずです。常に実践で勝つことを考えていた武蔵の姿勢に学ぶことが多い気がします。

In other words, he was surprised that he could make the same sound with either his left or right hand.

Normally, a sword is supposed to be held with both hands. Because it’s heavy. So Musashi created Niten Ichi-School, a two-sword style with a sword and a sword in both hands. Because he thought that by practicing two swords with both hands on a regular basis, he would be able to freely manipulate a heavy sword with only one hand, either left or right. is. Of course, being able to fight with both hands would have been necessary for Musashi, who was trying to use all means in a life-and-death fight.

However, Musashi was not always dual wield at the time of the fight. The actual battle takes place in a variety of situations, whether on horseback or in a small room. He thought it was of utmost importance to be able to use the most suitable weapons to win in any situation in a life-and-death battle.

Musashi describes in detail the following in the “The Book of Five Rings” about Niten Ich School, who holds two swords in both hands.

The reason I created the dual wield is whether it’s a samurai, a general or a soldier.

This is because everyone puts two swords on their waists.

Previously, swords were called swords and swords, but now they are called swords and wakizashi.

It goes without saying why the samurai put two large and small swords on their waists.

In Japan, it is a samurai’s way to put two large and small swords on the waist, regardless of whether you know the reason.

It is called Niten Ichi-ryu or Niten Ichi-ryu to let the world know the advantages of the dual wield that I have created.

However, when he holds a weapon in both hands, it becomes difficult for him to move his right and left hands as he wishes.

This is because I had never had a habit of manipulating a sword with one hand. Large weapons such as spears and long swords can only be held with both hands, but swords and wakizashi are originally weapons that can be held with one hand.

There are several reasons why holding a sword with both hands is not good. It is inconvenient when riding or running.

Swamps, mud fields, Ishihara, steep roads, and crowds are also inconvenient.

When you have a bow, spear, or other weapon in your left hand, everyone uses a sword with one hand, so holding the sword with both hands is not the way to use a sword.

If it is difficult to kill an enemy with one hand, use both hands to kill it.

Don’t worry. First, in order to be able to swing the sword with one hand, hold the two swords with both hands and swing the sword with one hand to get a feel for it.

At first, everyone feels that the sword is heavy, so it’s difficult to swing, but what can be said in common with any weapon, not just swords, is that it’s difficult to use at first.

It’s hard to pull a bow, and it’s hard to swing a naginata.

It is important to get used to all the weapons, and the bow will become stronger as you practice.

If you can pull it and keep swinging the sword with one hand, you will be able to get the hang of it and swing it well.

The path of a sword is not just about swinging fast. I will write about that in the volume of water, so please read and understand it.

It is advantageous to swing the sword in a wide place and the wakizashi in a narrow place. This is the basis.

The essence of my Niten Ichi-ryu martial arts is to win with a long sword and win with a short sword.

Therefore, the length of the sword to hold is not specified.

The spirit of winning any sword is my Niten Ichi-ryu way.

Two swords are more effective than one sword when heading for a large number of people alone or in a small room such as a tatami room.

For example, when fighting in a place. I would like you to infer other examples from these two examples. It’s not enough to write it again.

If you know the path of military art and put it into practice, you will never know.

You will learn a lot from that mistake. I feel that I often learn from Musashi’s attitude, which was always thinking about winning in practice.
